Photos of internationally endangered species have long become his trademark. Photo Ark focuses on a grand scale on the subject of protecting animals that face extinction in a series of poignant animal portraits. Sartore has already achieved remarkable success with his project: It is a declaration of his love of nature and a powerful plea for biodiversity and the protection of wildlife on our planet.
Sponsored by National Geographic, Photo Ark is an ambitious global project that aims to document all species of animals in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries around the globe – from beetles and birds to big cats. The distinguished US photographer Joel Sartore set himself the task of visually documenting every species in captivity. He has so far photographed over 9,000 different animals and included them in his Photo Ark. The photos underline the beauty, uniqueness and fragility of the animals and highlight just how important animal protection is for the preservation of our planet. With the power of photography, Joel Sartore inspires people to help endangered species before it is too late.
The setting is key for Sartore. For each motif, the photographer chooses a simple black or white background. This allows him to create detailed images that draw attention to the different species' many wonderful characteristics. Thanks to this talented wildlife photographer and the collaboration between Komar and National Geographic, an extraordinary collection has been created. It is a collection of magnificent animal portraits that could not be more impressive or individual. But for all their uniqueness, the depicted animals have one thing in common: their status is classified as vulnerable or highly vulnerable according to the IUCN. These animals are often prized by trophy hunters and their habitats destroyed by humans. With Sartore's art prints on high-quality photo card in three different sizes (30 x 40, 40 x 50, 50 x 70), Komar takes us on a journey of a slightly different kind. It is a round-the-world trip that examines these endangered animals in a series of beautiful photographic studies. They are accompanied by descriptions of the species and fun facts about these extraordinary creatures. And so these wonderful animals continue to live forever, at least within our own four walls.
Joel Sartore is convinced: "We only protect what we love."
