Common picture-hanging mistakes

1. Position
Hanging pictures too low can make a room look compressed and lessen the impact of your favourite prints. If the frames are hung too high, however, everything looks out of proportion and disturbs the gaze as it scans the room. A good guide is to drill holes at a height of around 145 cm. If using picture frames of different sizes and formats, it is advisable to align the top or bottom edges of the images.

2. Spacing

When grouping pictures, leave a gap of between 5 cm and no more than 15 cm between the pictures. The impact is lost if the images are positioned too close together. Equally, excessive spacing can look out of place, especially with small pictures. Large gaps make the frames look lonely and lost. Equidistant spacing between all pictures is visually appealing because the eye responds to calm and order.

3. Arrangement

If you love family photos and have a whole smorgasbord, a perfectly arranged picture gallery offers the perfect showcase. However, this could soon end in chaos if you simply let loose, hammered in the nails and hung the pictures at random. Start by planning the arrangement and laying everything out on the floor first. A popular option for arranging pictures is a Petersburg or ‘salon’ hanging. This provides a useful guide for the orderly and presentable arrangement of a larger number of pictures. The trick is to create a lower or upper line to which all other frames are then oriented. As long as the area is large enough, this type of hanging can look wonderfully opulent and elegant. Even here, however, less is often more. It is better to focus on a few select, particularly beautiful motifs. Too many pictures can crowd the space and make it look compressed.
