1. Paper
Paper murals and wallpaper are inexpensive, environmentally friendly and good for the indoor climate, because as long as they are not painted over, they are breathable and pose no threat to our health. Pasting is key when it comes to hanging wallpaper or murals. Paper wallpapers and murals are less tear resistant than vinyl or non-woven options, for example. In order to avoid unwelcome mistakes, it is best to follow the instructions exactly. Even though painters and wallpapering professionals advise against papering over a wallpaper, it is possible to paste a new photomural over strongly adhering paper. In this case, special attention should be paid to the quality of the paste.
2.Woodchip
Woodchip is the classic among wall coverings. It marked the very beginning of the history of wallpaper and is still used today. The incorporation of small pieces of wood between the paper layers gives it its typical grainy surface structure. Woodchip, like paper, is particularly safe to use. Thanks to its composition, it is breathable, environmentally friendly and also inexpensive.
Thanks to its knobbly surface, woodchip wallpaper is easy to paint over. Wall paints adhere very well to this substrate, providing impressive results. Papering over woodchip wallpaper is not a good idea, however. The lumps can produce bubbles and make the result look uneven.
3. Non-woven
As the name suggests, non-woven wallpaper and murals are made from a combination of textile fibres and cellulose. This composition ensures a more tear-resistant and stable material and also a softer feel than paper or woodchip. Non-woven options are extremely versatile because they tolerate moisture and are dimensionally stable, which means that they retain their shape and do not warp. Non-woven wallpaper and murals can therefore also be used in damp rooms. Uncoated, non-woven murals and wallpaper are also breathable. Non-woven wallpaper and murals are more expensive to buy, but there is an enormously diverse selection of motifs and designs available.
4. Vinyl
There are a number of different types of vinyl wallpaper and murals. Synthetic, foam or lacquered wallpaper and murals are usually made of vinyl. They consist of a paper or non-woven backing to which a structured layer (PVC) is applied. Self-adhesive panels or wall wraps are also often made of vinyl. Due to their strong and coated structure, vinyl wall coverings are neither breathable nor environmentally friendly. Vinyl wall coverings contain plasticisers that are considered harmful to health, making them unsuitable for bedrooms and children’s bedrooms. So if you are looking for a sustainable material for your walls, vinyl is not the one for you. Vinyl does however has a number of benefits. It can be shaped in any way and can have different reliefs; an exciting stone look, for example, or gold shimmer effect.
