Not only is December the best month to decorate your home, it is also a great time to get your bake on. For many of us, gingerbread, mince pies and luxury stollen are part and parcel of the pre-Christmas period. What would the festive period be without a sweet temptation or two? To celebrate this, below you will find our favourite pre-Christmas recipe:
Delicious cinnamon buns with cream cheese frosting.
For the yeast dough, you will need:
- 500 g flour
- 270 ml milk
- ½ cube yeast (fresh)
- 60 g butter
- 50 g sugar
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar
For the cinnamon filling:
- 100 g soft butter
- 70 g sugar
- 2-3 tsp cinnamon
And for the frosting you will need:
- 70 g cream cheese
- 1 tbsp soft butter
- 1 tbsp icing sugar
First, make the yeast dough. To do this, heat the milk together with the butter. In a separate bowl, mix the sugar with the vanilla sugar and then add the crumbled yeast. Then add the warmed milk to the flour and thoroughly knead the flour mixture. Then place a clean, damp kitchen towel over the bowl and leave the dough to prove in a warm place for approx. 45 minutes. For the filling, cream the butter and add the sugar and cinnamon.
Once the dough is ready, roll it out into a rectangle of approx. 40 x 30 cm. Top with cinnamon filling, spreading almost to the edge of the dough, leaving a margin of around one centimetre free. Roll up the dough along the length and cut into eight rolls. Place the rolls in a greased 30 cm diameter baking dish. Leave the dish to prove again in a warm place. After a half-hour rise, place the cinnamon buns in the oven (preheated to 180 degrees) and bake for approx. 20-30 minutes.
For the topping, beat the cream cheese, soft butter and icing sugar until fluffy and then spread on the cinnamon buns while they are still lukewarm.
Enjoy your Christmas baking. And happy eating!
