The history of Mother's Day
Mother's Day as we know it today has its origins in the United States. At the beginning of the 20th century, Anna Jarvis campaigned for a holiday in honour of all mothers. In 1914, Mother's Day was officially introduced in the USA and soon spread to Europe.
The idea of honouring one's own mother is much older. Goddesses and mothers were celebrated in ancient times, and in 16th-century England, ‘Mothering Sunday’ was an important holiday. Today, we associate Mother's Day with flowers, small gifts and shared experiences that express our gratitude.
