At home with CMO Marina Häusler

At home with CMO Marina Häusler

I’m in the car and driving along the A8, heading towards the Chiemgau Alps. Sitting next to me is Marina Häusler, Managing Director and CMO of Komar Products GmbH & Co. KG. “Every evening, when I drive home after work, take the motorway exit and can see the mountain ahead, it is like entering an oasis of calm,” she says with a relaxed air, looking out of the window.

We are now driving along a narrow country road, heading up the mountain. Before us, we can see the Hochries, one of the most famous mountains in the Chiemgau region. In Samerberg, everything still seems right with the world. The holiday region is a popular tourist destination. In the midst of birdsong, alpine huts and vegetable gardens, this is where Mrs Häusler grew up. Having spent the last ten years living largely in the big city and enjoying the hustle and bustle of metropolises like Montreal or Munich, she has recently returned to her roots and today lives with her husband in the exact same place where she once played in the garden with her siblings.

When we arrive, she leads me straight onto the terrace. Taking off her shoes, she walks barefoot through the grass. The sun slowly sets, bathing the beautifully landscaped garden in a golden light.

I would like to ask my colleague a few questions about her former parental home and now current home in Samerberg.

Marina, how would you describe your interior design style?

I would say cheerful, creative and homely. Almost all the furniture is second hand. I like it when a piece of furniture tells a story. That’s why mine and my husband’s home is mainly furnished in vintage style. The bedroom, however, is more boho chic. You can also find individual pieces everywhere in my house, some with a typical country house character.

Which piece of furniture are you particularly proud of?

My little apothecary cabinet that I bought in a flea market has been with me since I moved into the first flat of my own. I once stored my plant collection there and now it’s for my books, which are arranged by colour, of course... (laughs).

Which is your favourite place in the house?

To be honest, it varies depending on the season. In winter, I prefer to spend time at our big oak table in the open-plan kitchen. It is great for when you have guests. We have certainly spent a lot of time around it. Last spring, when it rained a lot, we liked to be in the cellar. My husband recently built a bar in there, so we were busy setting it up and listening to loud music while we did so. Now in summer, I love spending time in the garden in my hanging swing chair. I don’t yet know what my favourite place will be in autumn. But there will certainly be one.

Where do you prefer to buy your furniture?

As I mentioned before, I rarely buy new furniture. Most of my furniture consists of souvenirs, second-hand items from the flea market or inherited pieces, such as my grandfather’s side tables from Indonesia. I did buy a new bedside cabinet from Kartell.

You love colour; is that also the case in interior design?

To be honest, I have tried to stick to one colour before, but I can’t. I love playing with splashes of colour between wooden furniture. I’m more like Pippi Longstocking. I’d rather be chaotically creative than minimalist and elegant.

What couldn’t you do without in your home?

My huge SMEG fridge and the open-plan kitchen are very much me. I love being able to serve my guests while being directly involved in the action.

What would you never have in your house / Are there any ‘no-gos’ for you when it comes to furnishing?

I never say never, because I am absolutely open to new things. However, I am not a big fan of high-gloss furniture in black or white. I prefer wooden furniture. I like the fact it creaks sometimes and seems to have a bit of life to it.

Do you have any other Komar décor elements in your home besides murals (wall art, window stickers etc.)?

Yes, all over in fact. In the bathroom, for example, I have a self-covered stretcher frame made from old mural remnants. Downstairs, in our party room, there are a few wall stickers featuring apposite quotes and, in the living room, we have an art print from Komar; my favourite painting by a famous artist and feminist.

Where would you rather live, town or country?

I grew up in the countryside and have a strong connection to nature. However, I have also experienced big city life, first in Munich and then in Montreal. I like both, but currently I prefer life in the country. The peace and quiet does me good and calms me down. And I also really enjoy being close to family. We are always welcoming visitors here, which makes me very happy. I cannot say that for certain that I’ll stay in the country forever though. I am very free and changeable.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I find a lot of inspiration online, mostly on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok or creative platforms such as safe.it. I also regularly follow interior design blogs.

What mural would you never have in your home?

When I wake up in the morning and get out of bed, the first thing I see is the top of our local mountain and then, directly after that, the jungle mural Hortus, which is placed opposite our bed. I like this freshness.

Would you say that your décor reflects your personality?

It is probably more my personality that is reflected in the interior design of the living space. My husband John was responsible for the bar and it shows. Unlike me, he is less concerned with the outward appearance. His main priority is to like and enjoy the space. That’s why it was especially nice to design this room. It was not about perfectionism, just fun.

This is your parents’ old home. Is there anything in it that you inherited from your parents?

My parents built their dream house. Now that all the children have moved out, they have pretty much started a new chapter and left a lot of their furniture to me.

The safe haven for a globetrotter who loves coming home as much as she loves travelling? It is exactly what life is all about: vibrant, cosmopolitan and at the same time an oasis of calm and tranquillity! And a must-have in this special place? Murals that emphasise this vibe and provide an insight into Marina and John’s history.
