We were intrigued to know what Sabine Komar-Häusler’s home looked like. As CEO of Komar Products GmbH & Co. KG, she is head of all sales areas, provides creative input for the marketing team and, only a short time ago, moved to a new-build house in Rosenheim, southern Bavaria. To satisfy our curiosity, we invited ourselves to have a look around and there were plenty of questions to ask.
1. Your house is almost finished. What can you tell us about the building first of all?
My husband Georg grew up in the street where our new home now stands. As a boy, he used to play with the neighbour’s children in the house that was previously there. We are therefore connected to the place. During the planning, we worked with our architect Thomas Gerhager to make sure that the new house fits in with the architecture of the surrounding buildings and therefore remains close to the "old house". The exterior shape is therefore similar to that of the neighbouring houses, except for its ‘ears’. The ‘ears’ are two walls to the right and left of the house, which extend out to the front as far as the gables and give our house its special character.
2. How would you describe your interior style and what aspects are important to you?
Minimalist. Creating space for comfort and relaxation is also important to me.
3. Have you brought much furniture and things with you or are you more of an ‘out with old, in with the new’ type of person?
There are few walls left for furniture because the house is very open plan with a lot of glass. What we urgently need is storage space because we also wanted to move some things with us: small things, objects received as gifts or inherited, utensils that we use rarely but regularly. So Andreas Greive has installed new, large built-in cupboards to accommodate a lot of the old things. At the same time, I’m also attached to my old chests of drawers, so they’re also back. To answer your question: Yes, both. In other words, there’s a lot of new, but also some old.
4. Murals play an important role in your everyday work. How does that cross over to your home? Do you have murals?
I love using picture murals on my walls as they provide an opportunity to play with light and form, to add depth and create a mood; cosiness and nature in my case. Yes, of course I have murals in my home.
5. Where do you find your inspiration?
Wherever I am, ideally travelling. Although most of my time at the moment is spent online unfortunately.
6. What is your favourite part of the house?
I have a small, open space on the first floor that I consider my favourite part.
7. Which trend can you not ignore?
Our house reflects a simple furnishing trend, dictated by its glass facades, exposed concrete surfaces and clean lines.
Add to that a tiny bit of colour. Cosiness, the palm leaf mural.
8. What was your primary focus during the interior design process? Was it the wall colours? The textiles? Or even the choice of the right mural?
I really wanted to entirely cover the concrete-grey wall on one side of our house with murals and create an expansive, harmonious atmosphere encompassing the entire west side as well as pleasant, congenial vibes for my living environment. So I asked our designers to design the interior wall of the house and also the interior of the ‘ears’ as one continuous mural. The palm leaves from the bedroom hang down into the dining area of the living room and carry the motif from the first to the ground floor, including outside on the ‘ears’. At the same time, the mural evolves as it flows from the bedroom to the dressing room and into the bathroom. The palm trees become olive leaves, then water plants in which our yellow-gold koi swims.
9. What was the biggest challenge/surprise for you when building the house?
The building technology, the central control system and life behind the large glass facade. As long as we continue to have no curtains and, in the future, when we slide open the glass panes, in this childhood place of Georg’s, we will live both inside and outside.
10. What are your three ultimate tips for planning a house?
Remain reflective and flexible; do not compromise on the really important decisions and at the same time always be open to new things and above all the needs of your partner.
